Project Details
CE Group has been engaged to provide labor services for the development of the POM Power Station near Port Moresby. This project is part of the Clough Wartsila Joint Venture and involves several key elements. As a leading electrical contractor in PNG, CE Group’s role is critical to ensuring the station’s success.
The project features one Site Engine Hall, which houses six Gas Generator Engines that supply medium voltage (MV) power to a dedicated MV Switchroom. This MV Switchroom is responsible for delivering two MV supplies to the Power Station’s switchyard. From there, the electricity is stepped up via transformers and transmitted through underground conduits. The primary side feeds 66kV into dual overhead lines that connect to the PNG Power Network.
Additionally, the MV Switchroom supplies two auxiliary transformers with MV power, ensuring consistent operation of the station’s auxiliary systems. The station also has a built-in redundancy system, which includes a Blackstart Emergency Diesel Generator. This backup ensures uninterrupted power supply during emergencies.
The project also includes a low-voltage (LV) Switchroom, which provides power to the Control Room. The Control Room is responsible for monitoring power and gas production, controlling inputs and outputs, and managing critical operations such as variable-speed drives (VSDs) and gas engine startups. The LV Switchroom plays a pivotal role in maintaining stable power for the station’s control systems.
Moreover, ancillary buildings like the admin building, warehouse, workshop, chem store, guard house, and compressed air building are all powered by LV systems. These systems are carefully reticulated through underground conduits from the LV Switchroom, ensuring efficient and reliable power distribution throughout the site.
The POM Power Station will generate 58MW of base load power for the Port Moresby power grid. This will be accomplished through the newly constructed 66kV power line and substation network. CE Group’s involvement as an electrical contractor in PNG is integral to supporting the economic and industrial growth of Papua New Guinea through this power project.
