BMA Goonyella Riverside Mine Fire & High Pressure Water Upgrade
Goonyella Riverside Mine, Moranbah, QLD

Project Details

BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) operates the Goonyella Riverside Mine (GRM), located approximately 35 kilometres north of Moranbah in Queensland. This mine produces around 7.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of high-quality metallurgical coking coal, which is sold both domestically and exported through Mackay. As a critical supplier of this valuable resource, ensuring the mine’s operational efficiency is paramount.

To support this effort, CE Group, a well-established electrical mining contractor, was awarded the Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) package by Walz Group. This project focuses on upgrading the joint fire water and high-pressure water network, which supplies the coal handling plant and surrounding areas. The upgraded network provides water for clean-up operations, conveyor sprays, dust control, and crucial firefighting scenarios. This comprehensive upgrade is crucial to maintain safety and functionality within the coal handling facility.

The project is being delivered in three distinct phases, starting with pre-shutdown works. This phase focuses on preparatory tasks necessary before the plant’s shutdown. The next stage involves the shutdown works, where CE Group will complete the most critical activities under tight time constraints. Finally, the post-shutdown phase ensures that all systems are fully operational before production resumes.

As part of the scope, CE Group is responsible for the installation and commissioning of a new switchroom, which includes the integration of a new transformer. Additionally, the team will supply, install, and commission various electrical components, such as Light Control Stations (LCSs), I/O panels, and power distribution boards. This comprehensive approach ensures that all electrical infrastructure functions seamlessly.

Furthermore, CE Group will handle the installation, testing, and commissioning of all instruments in line with the project drawings and instrument schedule. In addition, the team will oversee the supply and installation of light fittings, complete with supports, mounting arrangements, accessories, poles, and concrete footings. This aspect of the project guarantees adequate lighting across all work areas, contributing to overall site safety.

Moreover, CE Group is tasked with installing and testing all equipotential bonding for the newly installed metallic structures. This process ensures proper electrical grounding, adhering to the earthing general arrangement and single-line diagram. Part of this responsibility includes ensuring that the newly installed earthing has a proper path back to the area’s main earth bar, which is critical for system safety and compliance.

As a leading electrical mining contractor, CE Group’s expertise in handling complex projects like the Goonyella Riverside Mine upgrade ensures that all existing services are restored once decommissioning is complete. This involves disconnecting and removing outdated equipment while ensuring the site remains operational and safe.
