Goonyella Riverside Mine (GRM), located in the Bowen Basin, lies approximately 30km north of Moranbah and 190km southwest of Mackay. The Raw Coal Reclaimer and Raw Coal Stacker at Goonyella Riverside Mine are over 30 years old. As a result, much of the machinery no longer complies with the latest Standards, Codes, and BMA specifications. To address this, and with the goal of extending the operational life of these machines, a comprehensive overhaul of both the electrical and mechanical infrastructure was planned.

As a trusted electrical mining contractor, CE Group was selected to perform the significant works required during the scheduled shutdown. The scope of the project included all electrical and instrumentation (E&I) activities, alongside mechanical rectifications for both machines. First, CE Group replaced the existing switchrooms, installing temporary works to facilitate their removal. Moreover, the project involved replacing the travel motors, removing the travel brakes, and updating the isolators and cabling to meet new standards.

Additionally, CE Group reconnected existing cables to the newly installed switchrooms and, at the same time, made modifications to the platforms and handrails to accommodate the updated infrastructure. Next, CE Group carried out thorough testing, ensuring quality assurance, and provided ongoing assistance for the commissioning phase.

To successfully meet the project timeline, CE Group mobilized a large team of skilled tradesmen who worked in both day and night shifts. Throughout the project, CE Group also engaged and managed a mechanical subcontractor, working closely to minimize interface issues. Even though the project scope increased during the shutdown, CE Group still completed the work on time.

Ultimately, the project was delivered successfully, with the plant returning to full operation as required by BMA. This achievement not only demonstrated CE Group’s expertise in handling complex mining projects but also reinforced their reputation as a leading electrical mining contractor, adept at delivering multidisciplinary projects in challenging environments.
